Chamber of Commerce web site 2009: Camping with Dogs
You may be considering taking Rover along on your next camping trip. After all, if you enjoy connecting with nature maybe he will too. Most people use the services of family or a kennel to take care of the beloved family pet when heading outdoors but taking him along can be enjoyable for both of you. There are both pros and cons to settling in under the stars with man’s best friend at your side.

The major decider on taking the dog or leaving him at home may be the restrictions that your chosen camping location has on domestic animals. Some parks prohibit dogs in the camping area entirely and that will impose some restrictions on where you camp. If there are wild animals in the area you are camping, and there usually are even if you don’t see them, you must be sure that you can keep your dog totally under control.

By planning safe, successful, enjoyable camping trips when your kids are young will set them on the path to a lifetime of outdoor adventures. Chamber of Commerce web site 2009: Survival 101

The best way to ensure survival should you become lost in the woods is not to get lost in the first place. Most people find themselves in the predicament of being lost in the woods by wandering off a trail or away from their companions by failing to be mindful of their actions and their surroundings.

If you do spend a great deal of time camping of hiking in the back country, investing some time and other resources in learning what to do ‘just in case’ makes good sense. At the most it could save your life and at the least you’ll impress you friends with your MacGyver-like skills.

While being lost in the woods is a terrifying idea to most people, surviving is really a matter of common sense, patience, and knowing which of nature’s gifts to use to help you. Along with shelter and water, fire is the most important thing you need to survive when lost in the bush for a few days.

Chamber of Commerce web site 2009: Stargazing
“As warmer weather arrives in Huntsville/Lake of Bays the brilliant stars of summer begin to position themselves in the overhead skies. For beginning stargazers the trio of stars that form the Summer Triangle remains the symbol of the season and there is no brighter or easier star to find than brilliant Vega. Anchoring one of the corners of the Summer Triangle, blue-white Vega is the lead star of the constellation Lyra -the harp. Relatively nearby at 25 light years, it shines so brightly because it is three times the size of our sun and produces 50 times as much light. Vega is a young giant at only 400 million years of age. In 1983 astronomers discovered a disk of dusty material whirling around the star that may indicate the early stages of evolution of a new planetary system.”

Autumn: an inspiration for writers, poets, and artists

Against a deep blue sky the leaves are shades of fiery red, glowing orange, vibrant yellow, and earthy brown: this is autumn in Huntsville, Lake of Bays and Algonquin Park. When autumn first begins to assert itself, the leaves begin their metamorphosis, dropping their summer camouflage to reveal a myriad of vibrant colours.

In the beginning, the change is subtle but it takes only a matter of days before the elms, maples, sumac, oaks, and birch will be gloriously adorned. With vibrant shades literally saturating the landscape it is no surprise that our mood and outlook are often affected by the annual display. Likewise, the beauty of autumn and the sense of winter’s approach have long inspired artists, poets, and writers. Read on ....follow link
Animal Encounters

Huntsville/Lake of Bays is a nature-lover’s paradise. There are over 50 non-domesticated mammal species in the region with a handful topping the hope-to-see ‘wish list’ for most people. They include the black bear, wolf, moose, white-tailed deer, and our industrious friend the Canadian beaver. There is nothing like the thrill and awe one feels at spotting one of these magnificent creatures in its natural habitat. .......read on by following link
Chamber of Commerce Visitor's Guide
Toward the Summit: Huntsville hosts the world in 2010

This year the Chamber of Commerce Visitors Guide is expanding its focus beyond 2009. The guide will include a glimpse at the upcoming Huntsville G8 Summit of world leaders to be held at the historic Deerhurst Resort from June 25 to 27, 2010.

We trust that you will agree that this momentous event justifies a slight detour from our usual programme. (For updated G8 information as it happens, go to: http://www.town.huntsville.on.ca/residents/G8_Summit2010.htm)

The G8 Basic Primer

The first summit took place in 1975 in Rambouillet, France. The G8 is an informal group of eight of the world's leading economic powers: Canada, France, United States, United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, Japan, and Italy. The yearly summit allows the heads of participating G8 countries to meet directly with the goal of developing common approaches to some of the most compelling challenges facing the world.

Over time, the G8 has evolved from dealing almost exclusively with macroeconomic issues to an annual forum with a wider agenda that addresses a broad range of international economic, political, and social issues.

The G8 Expanded Primer

Since 1975, the leaders of the major industrial democracies have been meeting annually to deal with important economic, political and social issues facing the international community. The G8 is intended to be an informal forum, and it therefore lacks an administrative structure like those of international organizations such as the United Nations or the World Bank. The G8 summit brings leaders together not to ‘quick fix’ the world’s ills, but to talk and think about them together.

Canada joined the six founding countries at the San Juan Summit of 1976. At the 2002 Kananaskis Summit, Russia was identified as host of the 2006 G8, thus completing its process, which began in 1991, of becoming a full member. In addition, the European Union is represented within the G8, but cannot host or chair summits.

The G7/8 Summit has consistently dealt with macroeconomic management, international trade, and relations with developing countries. Their role has expanded to include microeconomic issues such as employment and the information highway and to environmental, crime and drugs and transnational security issues.

Hosting responsibilities rotate throughout the summit cycle at the end of the calendar year, as follows: France, United States, United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada. Throughout the year, personal representatives of the leaders, known as sherpas, meet regularly to develop and discuss the agenda and to track progress. Ministerial meetings permit ministers to meet regularly through the year to continue the work identified by each summit and to meet ad hoc to deal with issues that may be particularly pressing.

While the G8 is an unparalleled opportunity for world leaders to discuss vital international issues, it is also a forum in which to develop personal relationships that may assist them when a crisis emerges.

As the G8 summits are extremely high profile, they attract thousands of journalists to the summit locations. They are therefore subject to extensive lobbying by advocacy groups and street demonstrations by activists.

Criticism of the G8

The most widely held criticism of the G8 centres on the assertion that members of the G8 are responsible for global issues such as: the poverty in developing nations due to debt and trade issues; global warming because of carbon emissions; and AIDS suffering because of medicine patents, among other globalization issues.

The G8 has also been criticized regarding its membership, which critics argue is no longer fully representative of the world’s most powerful economies. France and the United Kingdom have expressed a desire to expand the group to include five developing countries, referred to as the Outreach Five (O5) or the Plus Five: Brazil, China, India, Mexico, and South Africa. These countries have participated as guests in previous meetings, which are sometimes called G8+5.

Why Deerhurst? Why Huntsville?

“Canada will host the 2010 G8 Summit in Huntsville, Ontario, in the heart of Muskoka. The area was chosen after a Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade study deemed the 800-acre Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville an excellent site for the event.

The location was chosen based on the need for appropriate accommodation and meeting facilities, good transportation links, including proximity to major airports, and acceptable security conditions.

The study took costs into account, as well as the prospect of minimal disruption for local residents and businesses. Canada's past experience hosting the G8 Summit has shown there are substantial short-term economic benefits for the host community and surrounding region, plus long-term tourism-related benefits resulting from international media exposure. The 2002 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta generated an estimated $300 million in short-term regional economic benefits.” (http://www.canada-g8-summit.com/)

The G8's On-Going Commitment
189 Heads of State and Government adopted the Millennium Declaration (Millennium Development Goals, MDG) in 2000, in which they pledged to meet eight goals by the end of 2015:
 Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
 Achieve universal primary education
 Promote gender equality and empowering women
 Reduce child mortality
 Improve maternal health
 Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
 Ensure environmental sustainability
 Develop a global partnership for development

While there has been considerable success to date, there is still a long way to go to meeting the Millennium Goals by 2015.

The G8’s Canadian Connection

The G8 summit at Deerhurst is the 36th G8 Summit and the fifth G8 Summit hosted by Canada since 1976. In a recent interview, The Honorable Tony Clement stated, “The 2010 G8 Summit will give Canada a chance to advance our interests, to advocate for open markets and free trade, and to champion freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law.”

Traditionally, the host country of the G8 summit sets the agenda for negotiations, which take place in the weeks before the summit itself, leading to a joint declaration which all countries can agree to sign. G8 membership enables Canada to pursue its broad foreign and economic policy agenda and interests with key countries and to help shape global developments on a range of issues, including responses to global crises.

The 2010 G8 Summit will follow the successful (and violence free) Kananaskis model named for the summit held in western Canada in 2002. The next G8 Summit has yet to take place in July 2009, but there are some aspects that are known given that leaders at the Kananaskis Summit laid out the cycle of summit hosts up to 2010. They made it clear that they have an expectation of the summit persisting in its present form and membership up till then.

If there are changes to either - and the current worldwide economic crisis makes that a reasonable possibility - G8 history could be made at the Huntsville G8 Summit.
